Aşa sunt şi nu sunt eu / That's who I'm and I'm not

[below in English]

Every person has a certain behavior that is shown every day. It can illustrate to a greater or a lesser extent the personality. Some people are more open and easily let others to discover their true nature, while other people need a lot of patience to trust someone in order to reveal their "secrets."

I consider myself an open book. I'm not really shy, and after five minutes of conversation I relax, I become the real Dana. I like, however, after a period of time in which I talk to someone, to ask that person how he / she has seen me at first and how their opinion has changed. I do not take into account the possibility to have the same opinion, and that is not because I am very confident that everyone loves me, but because of the initial reluctance.

I am often amused by the first impression I'm told that I give. It looks like I'm a serious girl, focusing on learning and possibly anti-social. Hohoho, how far is that from the truth!

Going out is supposed to mean for me to go to faculty and to the library, because I have glasses and dental braces. Surprise: I like to read, but, I admit guiltily, I learn only in the exam session. I'm not saying it’s wrong to learn on time, heaven forbid; the problem is mine, that I do not know to organize myself well and I waste time. How can I stay in the house if the weather is so beautiful? Okay, for a good' novel there are some minor exceptions, but the lessons do not convince me.

Also in this category is the sense of humor. I understand that I have a "nasty" situation, but life goes forward whether I accept it or not. What would be the purpose of self-pity? So I chose the most convenient way to live for me: I'm joking. No matter how difficult it may seem to be a period, an impossible event, or whatever it is, I always find something amusing and I hold onto that.

The jokes keep me on the surface and help me get over everything. I'm not saying my jokes are always funny, but I'm trying. Out of 10 jokes, at least 1 will be good. When I meet another person as crazy as me, I'm the happiest and it's hard for that person to escape from me. I'm worse than the glue, believe me.

The critical moment arrived, a big ending with a shock announcement: if you're one of the people close to me, you should know that you have something special. Maybe you think you are a rational, well-balanced person, or I do not know, but you should know that you're most of all crazy funny. In my circle of friends people enter only on the basis of this quality.

Competiţia / Competition

[below in English]

Everyone pretends to be satisfied with what they have and that they let things evolve on their own, but they do not know how to get more and more. Whether it's money, job hierarchy or skills, it's a constant need to be in the top. There is always the desire to be the best, it is an uninterrupted competition and it burns the soul. "How can my neighbor X have a better car than mine?" and such kinds of questions lead us to make it even impossible to live up to / exceed our expectations.

There is no point in mentioning companies which take advantage of this mad race without end. We have to keep up with the trends, so we immediately replace the products we've just bought for the more modern ones. We cannot afford to be "obsolete" and others to go ahead of us. (There seems to be, after all, an economist in me who thinks of the financial gain.)

I've always had a complex about my physical condition. Well, maybe there were more. The point is that I noticed it carefully. I'm talking now about the concept of "wheelchair = disabled person in all respects". Since childhood I felt an acute need to prove the opposite, and so I started to learn seriously. I thought, quite wrong, that having the best grades in the class meant that I was intelligent and the other people would stop judging me. If someone asked me why I was learning, my answer came mechanically: "I want to show everyone that if you're in a wheelchair it does not mean you're stupid."

In the middle of high school, I realized that striving to always be the best is a pressure that does not worth the effort. This has eliminated the stress of competition. Do not believe that my grades have fallen sharply. I have continued to learn from habit, but also because I like to know as much as possible. Well, that's a real geek affirmation and I assume it. I found other motivations for which I really want to fight.

The 1st place should not be achieved just for the sake of being better than the others. The only competition that matters is with us. I want to beat myself, to evolve with every passing day. I do not do it for others, I do it for me.

Lasă totul să plece şi vezi ce rămâne / Let it all go and see what stays

[below in English]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm that kind of person for which hope dies last. I fight until exhaustion to save situations and people. I fight for everything I consider important. Friendship is a vital element in my hierarchy. Thus, I do even the impossible not to lose people close to me. I'm constantly trying to find solutions to repair relationships or at least keep them in a latent state. I have a strange impression that that person will be there forever and time will not affect anything that keeps us together. It's one of my worst conceptions.

Time changes us. I'm not the same from 5, 3 or 1 year ago. I'm a completely different person today that I was yesterday. If I transform myself, I cannot claim the others to stay the same. It's a world of speed, one in which we're getting closer to each other or we distance ourselves, as time goes by. We are evolving, and it is normal that we do not have things in common with certain people anymore, and, at the same time, we make new acquaintances. We do not lose anything, but that's what we feel like when we sit and relive our memories. A black hole that seems to swallow us. Perhaps there will not be someone else to fill it, but it will surely be easier to bear as time goes by. The moments, seconds, minutes, hours and days heal.

Until now I could not accept to give up willingly to anyone. Now I realize that the loss was happening anyway, and the denial made no sense. I cannot force someone to walk by me side in a direction he / she does not want to go. I do not want to fight the windmills anymore. As it says: "let it all go and see what stays". If we have to continue on the same path, it will happen. If not, it's not a tragedy. Not all people are meant to accompany us throughout our earthly journey. It is a lesson I have learned recently and I intend to take it with me on the rest of my journey.

Cum ar fi fost dacă...? / What would be if...?

[below in English]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

We often think of "what would be if...?" and I stand and I meditate if there is any point in it. The past is gone and cannot be changed. Time has a one-way route, once you're on a road you cannot go back. Accepting this is what helps us reach the long wanted future, but it is sometimes difficult to get over the possibilities that we think we could have. Big dreams keep creativity high, so why not let them occasionally take us into another world?

The decisions must be assumed, but sometimes the events do not depend on us and I think regret is inevitable. I do not intend to deny, I have projected all kinds of possibilities of a "normal" life. In the most adventurous ones I'm somewhere in America at college, having a brilliant future in front of me and being totally independent. There's another version in which I'm traveling around the world and I'm not even aware of the painful reality. These are the most fantastic options that crossed my mind, but they all have a common element: the wheelchair is completely absent and my mother can live her own life, without being my shadow. However, reality must be accepted as it is because regrets will not change it.

I think it's impossible to avoid regrets. There will always be things we will not be able to live, even if we have the chance. Something went missing in order for something better to appear. If this does not happened, c'est la vie! Opportunities will come back, sooner or later. It is important to accept the present and not to live in the memory of what could have been.

That "what would be if ...?" It's just a story we're telling ourselves to make us feel better or because of melancholy. It's free to dream. We cannot do more than that and, anyway, the present is more than perfect. Everything is as it should be, and the future will be even more beautiful.
